What will the Future of Books be?

We were working on this project for NCT and researching for this is really tough. So the the question is will books become extinct eventually?

What is the definition of a BOOK: It is a set or collection of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment or other material, usually fastened together to hinge at one side. ( Ripped from Wikipedia)

Personally I do feel that reading online is much easier. However it makes us lazy and miss out certain parts of the file. I have tried reading an E-book. They didn’t publish the whole book and honestly I couldn’t be bothered to purchase the book even though I was curious about the ending.

So will I move on to E-books? Not now! I love reading books and I purchase books once in awhile. I like to keep them and nice covers play a part! I am a sort of reader who reads a book that I like over and over again. Reading is addictive! Whenever I start on a book I will bring it wherever I go. So I think I won’t move on to E-books in the near future.

HOWEVER

If I were given an E-book reader, I might move on to the E-books as it replaced the down side of a book which is the weight. Like me, I like to read on trains and buses but I really dislike the heavy bags that I have to carry with me. On top of that, it is not that nice to have bulky handbags. I will be realistic, although I will have to forgo the Nice book covers, e-book reader saves space and it is way lighter! On the other hand, I will be really mad if my e-book reader runs out of battery while I am reading. So I suggest, the e-book readers must have at least  a couple of batteries to be used interchangeably.

It will be a relief for parents and school children to not bring those heavy textbooks and bags to school. Highlighters will also be useless then. I think that e-textbooks will not available yet as it is always better to have a hard copy, in case the file is infected? Just like till date. We still have hard copies for contracts. I don’t think that will change. That is because anything electronic or online seems a little unreliable. It may be easily altered and of course tracked.

There is one reason why Books will not extinct. On the other hand, it will be integrated with the virtual platform to have more innovative and interesting ways of delivering information. I think this is where the Augmented Reality Books comes handy! Where 3D images will enhance the reading experience and interactivity. Who knows! There might be holograms in books next time! Snow White and Prince Comes alive! I like how it feels!  Its like watching a 3D movie! It is one way to attract people back to the cinemas rather than cooping at home and watching those illegal downloads. Books will have its comeback too! I believe!

The future for books might be bleak . However these are just speculations.  These are questions that even GOOGLE can’t answer. Nothing is definite but  somehow I am confident that it won’t happen!

“Where MY pancakes?”

Was reading the papers one morning and was astonished by this article which links crime with Facebook?

This is probably 2 weeks back but this is really interesting! I need to talk about how AMAZING Social Media has become!

CASE:  Boy,19 was 12 miles away from in Brooklyn when two guys were mugged. Having known that the police were looking for him in connection in a robbery, he turned in, confident that he will be released. However, he was picked up by one of the victims in lineup and was charged and jailed.

After 2 weeks, he was released as he has an Alibi that proves that he could not be at the scene!

ALIBI : Facebook Updates ” Where MY pancakes!” a min before the robbery.

It is true! “Facebook can get out of jail! ” Never thought that Social Media can be so amazing? From entertainment, to connection between friends, to socialising to a tool of marketers and now an ALIBI!

That is something commendable about Online Social Networking Sites! It records time,date and even from where you posted it! You cannot cheat! If you are tweet-ing or surfing net on Mobile! It shows!

Now I find updates on these sites are really essential. Cases like this, save your life! Even dumb updates help!

But what happens if online social network join telephone records and video cameras as means of establishing an alibi? As technology advanced, people hold different identities behind their screens, what happens if others misuse it? Then it wouldn’t be credible anymore.

Quoted: “We’re in a much more trackable world, and for better and for worse,” said attorney Jonathan Handel. “The extent to which it means that the right people get prosecuted and the innocent get their cases dropped, that’s all of the good.”

I believe Online Social Network will definitely help a lot innocent people over at US! (I doubt we will have it here!)  However, there will definitely be some people who wants to test the system and abuse this form of alibi, leverage on it and escape penalties after committing a crime. It is a controversial topic.

However, I totally agree with Mr Jonathan Handel! Privacy Issue comes to question. If the Social Network Experts get to view everything that is online? Then he will probably know everything. Halt! He might be GOOGLE?

But I wonder how do one define a Social Network Expert? Will there be a diploma or even degree for that next time?

Looks like our lives are moving on to the virtual platform very very soon! With jobs online, shops online, books online,etc. Almost everything! What will become of us if one day, internet dies ? For even an hour? I will feel distant from the world. Because we are all living in the Cyber world in Internet time with lots of friends and suddenly. Life is boring and dull. Trust Me! With the aid of technology and the rising popularity of Online Social Network. Everyone is going to come together. For the better or worse? Hindrance or Help?

Singtel Rocks!

It is the 5th week of school.  Today is already the 4th day that I am deprived of internet usage at home! Has been cursing and swearing the wireless.

Thank god! After 30 minutes of assistance from Singnet Customer Service, my problems are finally solved! I am certainly grateful, however, what awes me most is the technology used by the Singnet to assist me in solving my wireless problem.

Previously one of the #nct class was talking about skype having the technology to share screen with your friends and watch movies together at different ends of the world.

I experienced the greatness of it today! I was facing problems with my internet. Thus, I called Singnet. After a few instructions, the problem was not solved. So I was asked to connect to the cable to get connected to the Internet. Guess what’s Next?

She was controlling my desktop!

I do not need to waste much efforts on following instructions or bring my laptop down for them to fix it now. It was so efficient. She changed all the settings from her location and all i need to do was to assist by entering the password. She totally can see whats on my desktop and control it as if it was with her!

HOW COOL CAN TECHNOLOGY GET! In this situation, it is really effective and efficient! I think technology advances should be used for a good purpose. For instance, improve service and efficiency of a company. In this way, achieve customer satisfaction and save more resources. What it means is that we need more Technology Savvy people around! In a couple of years time, if you are not up to date on the technology advances, your job might be at stake!

However I wouldn’t rule out the fact that it can be very dangerous. That goes to show that privacy issues are at stake in years to come. Where people get the permission to control or access to others’ computer. Alter, put or take documents in your computer without your knowledge. What this means is that everyone will have to be extra cautious and sensitive when serving the net. Everyone has to be a public relations practitioner. While more people get online, what you do online and say online matters! You need to maintain an image. With more bloggers relying on blogs for revenue. It is no longer what it was meant to be ( online diary). That is because it is no longer safe! (Even if its a private account)

Previously I has doubts of augmented reality and those technology that will be available in future. But now, i”m stumped. Experiencing all these have convinced me that what we discussed in #Nct class will come alive one day!

Podcast is the Winner!

Chapter 1 of Wk 3

It is already the end of 3rd week of school and I haven’t had time to start on the eventful learning “s” of the week! (Flu bug kissed me!)

I cannot afford to miss out last Monday’s lesson as I would say it is the most interesting one in my option.

We had three presenters on three different topics. Namely,Interactive Tv, Podcast and Skype!

Well in my option, I love podcast the most. I didn’t realise that podcast can be so interesting and easily available. It is really a  great source of entertainment and advertising medium.

Simply get Mr Brown to come up with a Podcast- you get information, entertainment and draw lots of attention! You get great reach. I think the reason why people like podcast because it is informal, it is very close to the heart and it is hilarious. It is intelligently hilarious! Kudos to the successors of podcast! I really love it!

Interactive Tv I would say its kinda of useless. When I am saying this I am talking about those ‘interactive’ Tv ads whereby they demonstrate how to use a product and you have to call to buy it and all.

ASK yourself this question. Do you STILL watch as much TV programs  at this time and age?

Its not working Marketers! It should be eliminated.

As for Singapore Idol and Superstar that sort of Interactive Shows, I have never voted.  To be honest, 90% of those who votes are friends and relatives so isn’t the award considered “bought”?  Why can’t they have another avenue for voting ? For instance, availability to vote online.  Its more interactive, people can discuss about the contestants almost instantaneously and gain support.

On the other hand, at the marketer’s point of view  I definitely  will want them to call,  its revenue to me, why not?

What about those shows who allow viewers to text and show their messages on TV? Personally, I feel that having people to declare their love or hatred is quite romantic and interesting.

Now Skype!

Skype Versus Msn (Aliens Vs Humans)

Skype is so wonderful and magical! But what can beat Messenger Live. Habits are hard to die for.

We had a great argument on Skype Versus Msn during the whole presentation! Edith was trying her best to show us the wonders of Skype!

To be able to:

- Watch movies together at different ends of the world

- Look at each other and chat for FREE or at a cheaper rate

- Transfer files efficiently

- And many more

However I guess everyone is just biased and too used to using MSN! It is true that Skype is amazing but I guess its out of everyone’s comfort zone. One thing I love about Skype is the ability to share screen with another party. If you are so unfortunate that you lost your files in your thumb drive for the vital presentation, you have Skype to fall back on. Just send to all your reliable friends and siblings the night before and use Skype with them and ask them for the slides. Isn’t that awesome. It is the greatest tool invented!

However Privacy will them become an issue! If you show something(of explicit content) to your friend, you cannot guarantee that he won’t show it to someone else right?

Well, every amazing invention has its flaws!

Time files! Its the 3rd week alrdy! So officially we have approx 1 mth left? Gosh!

I’m starting to enjoy NCT lessons now as its getting more interesting!  More interactive more fun and rather relaxing.

NCT # Week 2, Part 2

Friday’s lesson was awesome but a little bone-chilling!

Ted sixth sense TECHNOLOGY

We come to realise a very disturbing fact that the TECHNOLOGY takes over our life in every single way. You can never make a mistake because, it will be a shadow that will follow you forever! Its going to be recorded in the database of everything you do! Scary uh? Wouldn’t it create lots of insecurity and issues about privacy?

However! That technology is pretty cool as well like:

- Taking photos with just your fingers?

- Drawing a Nike watch on your arm when you need it?

Wow! You probably just need one gadget in five or ten years time! (Not even a Computer!)

Last week Ariane’s group brought us some informative and interesting presentation! Kudos! Mobile Revolution is so amazing! From just calling?  Till sms-ing, a camera, a mp3,a mini computer ? Cool!

NOW! You can stick your fingers in your ear to answer a call! (I think its gross though!) HAHHA!

Social Addicts!

It’s the 2nd week of school. Seems like really fast!

Yesterday was the first NCT conducted by us! Shu May and I were given the honour of being the first to conduct NCT. Well it wasn’t that bad afterall!

Dicussing about what we do everyday- Social Networking Sites are they for the better or worse in our lives? Well of course for the better! Although I do agree that it decreases the time you interact with people face to face, it benefits you in many other ways!  We are so busy with our work everyday. Many times we do not even get to spend half an hour chatting with our peeps! With technology and these useful social networking sites we can chat with them and know about their lives almost everyday! Wonderful isn’t it! Internet RULEZ!

Anyway, we did a social networking addict test and the result is more than 90% of us are social networking addictss! We need to go to REHAB!

Eugenia and Alisia made an interesting QUIZ too! Widsom of the Crowds! The quiz introduced us to Robert! That creepy haunted doll! Gosh gosh gosh! The questions were so interesting! Then it comes to the discussion, no one really concentrated because we were all distracted by ‘Robert’! Grr! Yoga even found him on twitter!

Oops! I realise I didn’t even mention about PP! Sorry Mr Yong! It was early 8am I have little memory of it! Geez!

After school we went to MOF for lunch together finally after school starts! It was fabulous! Everyone loved their own order and everyone ordered desserts after that! How was the cost like?  Well, affordable! There’s a 30% discount for all students and members on mon-fri! Awesome right! We went home full and satisfied! The guys gave up on training and gyming! After? 1 week! HAHAhA! Like what Ms Kwa said- “They wouldn’t last more than a week!”

Went home after that. Dead beat=/ I didn’t have the intention to sleep I swear! But I fell aslp the min i lie down, gosh! I suspect there’s alcohol in my Ice-cream!

I Love TUESDAYS! No school! Wanted to play squash but no more courts=/ Gym-ed with Elaa instead! It was fun! Though i didnt really work out much=// Elaa exercised longer instead! I’m so lazy! I feel super tired even though I believe I had at least 8 hours of sleep… Oh ya anyway! I’m done with 10 bookmarks for my fundraising! Guys please support! Back to today! On my way back I had to resist so many temptations! Smelt fries and I thought I was imagining things! Had fried rice in the end and I realised its not enough! GOsh! I seriously think I put on weight and I’m eating a lot nowadays! AHH!HOWEVER! I will be on diet after nov 3rd=)

SO! Any recommendations for nice high tea buffetssss ? -Zann-
